Quick Summary

Rodan and Fields is a well-known skincare company founded by dermatologists Katie Rodan and Kathy Fields. With a strong focus on providing effective skincare solutions, the company has built a solid reputation over the years. However, as a multi-level marketing (MLM) business, it operates on a model that requires consultants to both sell products and recruit new members, which can be challenging for many.

While the products themselves are backed by the expertise of real doctors and have received positive reviews for their quality, the income potential for consultants is quite limited. According to the company’s income disclosure, the majority of representatives earn very modest amounts, with only a small percentage making significant earnings. This high failure rate is typical of MLMs and can be discouraging for those hoping to achieve financial independence through this business model.

Overall, Rodan and Fields offers legitimate skincare products and an opportunity for those with strong sales and recruitment skills. However, it’s important to approach this opportunity with realistic expectations and an understanding of the challenges involved. For those not passionate about skincare or uncomfortable with the recruitment aspect, this may not be the best path to financial success.

Is Rodan and Fields a Scam or Legit MLM?

Rodan and Fields is not a scam. They sell legitimate products and pay their consultants as promised. Their website is well-designed and provides comprehensive contact information, including a physical address, phone numbers, and operating hours. Rodan and Fields have a large and enthusiastic fan base, with hundreds of thousands of followers on various social media platforms.

Similar to other MLMs, Rodan and Fields operate on a referral and recruitment system. New members join the company through invitations from existing members, who receive a small percentage of the sales when a new member purchases a specific line of skincare products and a kit.

While MLMs have their drawbacks, it’s important to note that Rodan and Fields is a legitimate opportunity. However, whether or not it is the right job for you is a decision you need to make. This Rodan and Fields review aims to provide you with more information to help you make that decision.

What Is Rodan and Fields?

Rodan and Fields is a personal treatment multi-level marketing business that offers skincare items to assist you in getting rid of acne and other skin conditions. Founded in 2002 by friends Katie Rodan and Kathy Fields, who are qualified skin specialists with a great deal of experience in the skincare market, the company provides you with the possibility to generate income with the “direct sales” service model.

In this Rodan and Fields review, I will assess their MLM program and the profitability of their items, so you can determine whether or not their program is viable.

About the Owners

Katie Rodan and Kathy Fields, the founders of Rodan and Fields, are dermatologists with impressive credentials. They initially made their mark in the skincare industry with their first venture, Proactiv, a well-known acne treatment. Their expertise and reputation in dermatology lend significant credibility to Rodan and Fields.

Rodan and Fields was born out of their desire to provide effective skincare solutions that go beyond acne treatment. Is Rodan and Fields a Pyramid Scheme?

Rodan and Fields, similar to companies like Amway, Tupperware, and Primerica, is classified as a multi-level marketing (MLM) business. While the primary income stems from building a network of suppliers below you, it’s important to note that earning income solely from product sales is also possible.

So, is Rodan and Fields a pyramid scheme? Not quite. Initially, I had concerns about the legitimacy of Rodan and Fields due to the pyramid scheme allegations. However, my apprehensions were dispelled upon discovering the active community of consumers and the loyal following associated with the brand. These factors serve as positive indicators that Rodan and Fields is not a scam.

Nonetheless, it’s worth mentioning that the perception of whether Rodan and Fields resemble a pyramid scheme is subjective and dependent on individual viewpoints. The company’s structure, characterised by uplines and teams, does exhibit similarities to a pyramid scheme, wherein significant profits are made. Ultimately, it’s up to you to make your judgment.

What is a Pyramid Scheme?

According to Wikipedia, “A pyramid scheme is a business model that recruits members by promising payments or services in exchange for enrolling new members into the scheme, rather than providing investments or product sales.” You can check out a short video below to learn more…

Many people wonder why Rodan and Fields is often associated with pyramid schemes. The reason is that representatives can earn commissions by selling products and recruiting new members into the multi-level marketing scheme. This has led some to refer to it as a pyramid scheme in disguise.

Is Rodan and Fields a Pyramid Scheme in Disguise?

Rodan and Fields is not a pyramid scheme. They promise settlements based on the sales made by others you register, but there are no direct repayments just for getting them to join. While legally not a pyramid scheme, whether you consider Rodan and Fields as one depends on your viewpoint. Nonetheless, they are a credible business that operates within the standards set out by the Federal Trade Commission.

Rodan and Fields primarily focus on skincare, especially acne removal. These products aim to improve the feel of your skin, making it more hydrated, refreshed, smoother, plumper, and healthier-looking.

Are Rodan and Fields Products Any Good?

For a product to be considered medical-grade, it must undergo clinical trials and possess both cosmetic and medicinal qualities. While Rodan and Fields products are “skin specialist influenced” and scientifically tested, there is no explicit mention of them being medical-grade. However, given that dermatologists develop them, it can be inferred that they are dermatologist-approved.

Are Rodan and Fields Products FDA Approved?

Some of the Rodan and Fields items contain over-the-counter active ingredients that technically require FDA approval. Although they have not yet obtained that specific stamp, they are certified to comply with all FDA policies.

In this Rodan and Fields review, we’ll delve into the pricing aspect of these products in due course. But for now, let’s explore the distinctive selling points and understand how this MLM scheme operates.

How Does Rodan and Fields MLM Work?

To become a member or representative, you will need to purchase Rodan and Fields products. Once done, you have the option to either use the products yourself or promote the company. It is highly recommended to do both.

The compensation you receive is not solely based on marketing Rodan and Fields products. You can also earn incentives from the sales of new members recruited by you, as well as those hired by your recruits. However, this is the main reason why some people mistakenly label Rodan and Fields as a pyramid scheme.

The issue lies in the fact that to make any substantial profit, you’ll have to market a large number of their products. Additionally, it’s important to note that you’ll need to initially purchase the products in order to sell them. This poses a problem, at least in my opinion. Essentially, your earning potential is limited by the amount you can invest in purchasing the products. This “pay to play” requirement is the primary reason why Rodan and Fields often gets labeled as a pyramid scheme. However, before we make any hasty conclusions, let’s first examine the compensation structure.

How to Make Money with Rodan and Fields MLM?

There are several ways to earn as a Rodan and Fields consultant:

  1. Retail Profit: This is the difference between the consultant’s price and the retail or PC price.
  2. Consultant Commission: Consultants earn a 10% commission when their downline consultant and preferred customer make a product purchase. To receive this income, a consultant must acquire a minimum of 100 SV.
  3. Personal Team Commission: Consultants earn a 5% commission on product purchases made by their personal team. To qualify for this commission, a consultant needs to achieve the Executive Consultant rank by completing 600 PSQV.
  4. Generation Commission: Different generations are created under the Executive Consultant (EC) in the downline. A 5% commission is rewarded from each generation, requiring at least a Level I Executive rank to receive this income.
  5. Performance Bonus: Performance Bonuses are provided for major achievements and consist of special rewards.

As mentioned in my Rodan and Fields review, the most effective way to earn money is by personally trying the products and recruiting more people for your downline to generate passive income. Additionally, you earn bonuses and commissions from any sales or purchases made by your downline. This approach helps Rodan and Fields avoid being labeled as a pyramid scheme.

Can You Make Money Selling Rodan and Fields?

The reality is that the majority of people never achieve the monetary independence that programs like these promote. In fact, 99% of those who join online marketing will fail. This doesn’t mean Rodan and Fields is bad; it just suggests that it’s not the best way to make money for everyone.

While Rodan and Fields is a legitimate MLM company and not a scam or pyramid scheme, some business practices used by private representatives can be deceptive and not fully controlled by the company. In other words, many MLM representatives make exaggerated claims to earn more money, which is why some reviews label Rodan and Fields as a pyramid scheme. The scheme itself may not be fraudulent, but the sales pitch can be.

Achieving success by recruiting people according to the strategy (and having your downline do the same) is extremely rare. Even the most successful individuals need to continuously work with their downlines, attend events, and help their team members build their organizations. MLM companies promote a luxurious lifestyle and residual income while downplaying the time, effort, and unique circumstances required to achieve it.

The reason most people fail to make money with Rodan and Fields (or any MLM) is simple. Selling and recruiting require specific skills, personality traits, and an uncommon ability to handle rejection. The reality is that many people don’t possess these qualities. Think of it this way: Success is difficult. If your actions do not align with your passions and strengths, making money with Rodan and Fields or any other MLM is impossible.

How Much Do Rodan and Fields Representatives Make?

During the recruitment procedure to become a Rodan and Fields representative, they often showcase bios of their greatest superstars, complete with family pictures and motivating stories. And there are others much like them featured on the Rodan and Fields website. It’s clear that many of these individuals are sincere in their desire to help others, and there is a lot to be learned from their success stories.

Most of these top earners have discovered success by working part-time hours for roughly 6 months to 3 years. But how much did they actually make with Rodan and Fields? And how much can you earn if you decide to become a representative? To get answers, let’s check out the official income disclosure from 2022.

According to Rodan and Fields’ 2022 Income Disclosure, the average earnings of a Typical Consultant is only $366 per annum. 56% of Product Ambassadors average an income of $143 per year. While 4% of their consultants are earning decent money, it’s important to note that these figures are before expenses and will not provide the luxurious lifestyle often promoted by MLMs.

Yet, this dream of significant earnings is what needs to be offered to keep people signing up and the commissions flowing. A 2016 Forbes article stated this about Rodan and Fields:

rodan-and-fields-compensation-plan

The data highlights that while some representatives achieve success, most earn very modest incomes. It’s crucial to consider these figures and the associated expenses before deciding to join.

Rodan and Fields MLM Review: What I Like

Let’s start by discussing the positive aspects of this Rodan and Fields review.

#1 Owners Are Real Doctors

The owners of this company are true experts in skincare. Therefore, you can confidently say that this multi-level marketing business is run by professionals who possess a deep understanding of their field. Many online marketing owners create and release MLM products and then delegate the challenging tasks to professionals. However, in this case, the owners themselves create these products and confidently state that they have personally tested and tried them.

#2 Proven Background

Founded in 2002, this firm has maintained its credibility over the years. Unlike many other multi-level marketing companies that fade within 1 to 3 years, Rodan and Fields have been in the industry for over 20 years and continue to capture people’s attention.

#3 Low Start-Up Costs

Rodan and Fields have an extremely low start-up price. Unlike other multi-level marketing businesses that often charge people hundreds or even thousands of dollars simply to get started, Rodan and Fields only charge $75. Furthermore, they offer valuable incentives in return. This sets them apart from various other network marketing companies that bill you hundreds of dollars just for enrollment.

#4 Lots of Positive Reviews

On Google, there are numerous positive reviews about Rodan and Fields. While there may be many positive testimonials, it’s important to be cautious. Some of these reviews might be posted by representatives who have a vested interest in selling Rodan and Fields to you.

Rodan and Fields MLM Review: What I Don’t Like

There are several points that I disliked about Rodan and Fields. Here they are:

#1 Failure Rate is Extremely High

By signing up with Rodan and Fields, the likelihood of failure is high. Many MLM participants invest significant time and money in their pursuit of success, often resulting in disappointment. These claims are backed by statistics. It’s a fact that 95% of individuals who join multi-level marketing companies like Rodan and Fields end up losing their money.

The chart demonstrates that only 0.3% of their consultants earn more than $15k per year, which is equivalent to approximately $1,200 per month. Furthermore, the likelihood of making $1,000 per month is only 1 out of 333 professionals.

#2 You’re Trading Time for Money

Their consultants hustle 24/7 because earning money through network marketing is not easy. You have to stay alert all the time. If you still want to sign up with Rodan and Fields after reading this review, you will experience this firsthand. I am not trying to discourage you from joining this MLM. I am simply sharing the bitter realities I discovered after evaluating over 600 multi-level marketing companies like Rodan and Fields.

#3 Negative Google Trend

The popularity of Rodan and Fields is declining steadily, indicating that this MLM company is losing its appeal. As shown in the graph below, the company’s popularity is currently in a downtrend, signalling further decline.

On the bright side, the decline in popularity has a silver lining. A low Google trend translates to fewer competitors for you.

#4 You Have to Sell to Friends and Family

One downside of joining MLMs like Rodan and Fields is that individuals often feel obligated to sell to their friends and family, which can strain relationships. Many people agree reluctantly, just to avoid further pressure.

#5 Rodan and Fields Lawsuits

In 2011, the FDA issued a caution letter to Rodan and Fields regarding the production of lash boost serum containing unapproved and misbranded drugs, specifically Isopropyl Cloprostenate, which is a glaucoma medication. These ingredients have been found to cause severe side effects. In 2022, Rodan + Fields agreed to pay $38 million as part of a settlement for the lawsuits filed against them. As per the court settlement notice, customers who purchased Lash Boost between October 1st, 2016, and March 11, 2022, are eligible to receive either $250 in credit or $175 in cash.

Rodan and Fields MLM Review: Conclusion

Many people fail to generate income with Rodan and Fields, or any kind of multi-level marketing. Selling and recruiting require specific skills, character, and the ability to handle rejection. This is the main reason why people fail. They get excited about the financial opportunity, but when reality sets in, they quickly give up and label Rodan and Fields as a scam pyramid scheme. However, as I concluded in my review, it’s not.

That being said, a word of caution: if you have no interest in skincare products and recruiting people feels like a nightmare, don’t even think about joining ANY MLM. Certainly, these skills can be developed, but if you despise doing them, it’s not sustainable. Succeeding in a marketing pyramid requires high-energy marketing, public speaking, and the unique ability to sell and recruit.

Unfortunately, statistics show that almost 99% of participants never earn any life-changing income and end up wasting their time and money. This is the main reason why I do not recommend MLMs, including Rodan and Fields!
